The Saturday conference of leading Ruthenian organizations in Transcarpathia declared their aim to achieve Kiev’s recognition of the results of the 1991 referendum in which 80% of the residents of the area were in favor of the autonomous status of the region, the politnavigator.net reports.
This decision was made by participants of the meeting in Mukachevo, which was attended by representatives of the Carpatho-Russian Company, the Ruthenian movement, Company named after Dukhnovich, Sejm of Carpatho-Russians, etc. Organizations combine about 40 thousand people, their leaders said.
Ruthenians also intend to seek their recognition by Kiev as a national minority - the Ukrainian authorities, as it is known, still do not recognize the Ruthenian nationality, unlike European countries. The UN Committee on combating racial discrimination recommended Ukraine to recognize the Ruthenians back in 2006.
More than 10,000 signatures are already collected under appeal to the President of Ukraine and the Verkhovna Rada with the relevant requirements.
The document also refers to the need of recognition of the Ruthenian language, its study in schools, the opening of the Department of the Ruthenian language in Uzhgorod National University, the creation of the Ruthenian national programs on the local TV and radio.
In addition, the Ruthenian organizations decided to form a trade union of Transcarpathian migrant workers to protect the interests of migrant workers.
The next meeting of the Coordinating Council of the Ruthenian organizations is scheduled for April 8-10. The organizers of the Congress also called on to join their struggle representatives of other ethnic minorities.
