MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry discussed on Monday in a phone call the Ukrainian crisis and stressed the importance of efforts to stop ceasefire violations along the separation line in Donbass, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

In February, Kiev authorities and eastern Ukraine independence supporters signed a ceasefire deal in the Belarus capital of Minsk. The agreement envisioned the withdrawal of heavy artillery from the line of contact, among other things.

"The sides stressed the importance of additional efforts to stop violations of the ceasefire regime, especially the shelling of residential areas," the ministry said in a statement.

According to the statement, Lavrov and Kerry reaffirmed that all signatories of the Minsk agreements must strictly implement the "package of measures" and seek a direct and sustainable dialogue between Kiev authorities and self-proclaimed people's republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine.

A new round of fighting erupted in eastern Ukraine in the first week of June. Local independence supporters accused the Kiev forces of launching an offensive near the city of Marinka in Donetsk Region. Kiev forces claimed that the shelling was a response to the militia's advances.

EU Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic qualified the renewed hostilities as the biggest ceasefire violation since the Minsk peace deal came into effect.
