Western sanctions against Russian may be lifted or softened without the Crimea reverting to Ukraine, said the US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried, the man in charge of the US sanctions, speaking to Chech media outlets during a conference call on Wednesday.

According to Novinky, a Prague-based news portal, this could be a possible scenario if the ceasefire reached in Minsk on September 5 holds.

At the same time, the U.S. diplomat observed that some elements of the sanctions, like the investment ban, were directly tied to the Crimean situation. These could be maintained, said Fried.
